Our idea, was to build a solar cooker, a device that cincentrates the sun rays into a cooking vessel, like a small pot.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways to achieve such a thing, two very popular are the solar box cookers, and parabolic mirror cooker. These devices are common in big Thermo-Solar power plants, even though now the technology is inferior to modern Photo-Voltaic solar panels, though, they are still a thing of beauty to drive by.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"visu flipboard-image responsive_image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.directindustry.com\/emag\/issue-6\/img\/header-gemasolar-thermosolar-plant-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"494\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thermo-Solar power plant in Andalusia, spain. The disks were glued with cyanoacrylate glue (superglue) to the seat and the seat was attached to the acrylic plate with screws. The mounts and the hub were screwed to the acrylic plate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now that we had a good base for the optic part of the project, we still needed to be able to direct the mirrors toward the sun, to maximize the amount of light focused. This was done by taking apart a broom stick and cutting it into two parts, one as the base the the other as a rotatable arm, the broom itself was cannibalized for the female thread, which was inserted into the central hub mentioned before, so the mirror array was screwed into the arm.<\/p>\n<p>A plastic rotatable junction was designed to connect the two poles, so the mirrors angle can be adjusted and locked:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/broomstick-junction.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"628\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/broomstick-junction.png 628w, https:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/broomstick-junction-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Both arms were connected to the junction with zip-ties (not seen in the image) wrapped around them and under the plastic junction. The hub was not so bad, but the holes where the metal rods are inserted were a bit too small and it took quite a lot of hammering and was nerve wrecking, as destroying a night-long print and 150g of plastic is quite a shame.<\/p>\n<p>We proceeded by cutting the acrylic plate into a circle<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20180426_152534-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20180426_152534-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20180426_152534-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fenneclabs.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20180426_152534-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rectangular acrylic plate was cut to the shape of a circle using a jig-saw<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>the next step was to drill the mounting holes through the plate&#8230; about a 100 of them&#8230;. to ease the process, we printed the drawing of the holes and the circle and positioned them under the acrylic plate and proceeded with the drilling using those markings. The base pole was pressured between three doubly stacked rotational ball bearings, all screwed into a wooden base. The azimuth was controlled with a high torque DC motor coupled to the second pole&#8217;s pulley via another timing belt.
